[Introduction]
Nike x Pensole Academy is a three week master class in Portland, OR. I was one of two apparel designers, responsible for creating a set of apparel and accessories.
The project is to create a future female athlete who embodies the Serena Williams brand at Nike, and to design a complete collection from apparel and accessories to footwear for said athlete.
[Meet our athlete: Sol de Souza]
Born August 17th, 1997, Sol de Souza is a native to Bonito, a town in Brazil’s southwest region.
At the age of 10, she and her family moved to Farmington, Massachusetts for greater opportunities. While struggling to call this foreign land her new home, Sol, had to navigate racism, misogyny, and cultural differences throughout the rest of her adolescence, teens, and early adult life.
To find a community she felt welcomed rather than alienated her, she decided to attend Georgia’s Spelman College at the age of 19 to study nutrition.
After acclimating to her new surroundings, her parents had encouraged her to join extracurricular activities to further expand her social network and interests. It wasn’t until then, Sol’s closest friend had invited her to attend a beginners class at Stone Summit, a popular rock climbing gym in Atlanta.
The sport immediately captivated Sol for its physical and mental demand. Once she had transitioned from indoor to outdoor climbing, she had felt she had finally found something that brought her back to her Brazilian roots.
Toward the middle of senior year, she had gone from a mere beginner to an inspiring elite climber. Sol had set a goal to embark on one of her hardest climbs by the time she turned 25.
Now at 25, Sol has used her knowledge to help guide athletes with their diets and wellbeing. In her downtime between training, work, and her personal life, she has begun coaching young girls of color to help rewrite who the average climber looks like.
